Every garden in the English landscape garden style has a place of refuge for secluded contemplation of the bigger questions in life. The hermitage, (Danish: “Eremithytten”), is such a place. Hermits were formerly the virtuous and unworldly Christian philosophers who served as preachers and adhered to a wholesome and ascetic way of life. The Danish hermitages, like this example, were to be built of solid timber and stone, with slanting, clay-daubed walls.
