Venus with the Apple

About Venus with the Apple
This statue shows Venus, the Roman Goddess of love, sex, beauty and fertility with her child. Normally Venus is depicted holding a golden apple which was the prize Venus was said to have been given by the Greek prince Paris as the most beautiful of Goddesses. By depicting her with her child the statue instead becomes that of mother love and the fruits of a relationship of love. The many pigeons in the park fits perfectly with the traditional iconography of Venus since pigeons are often showed driving her carriage. The statue was unveiled in 1921.
