Steno Monument

This monument was raised in 1962 in honor of Niels Steensen, popularly referred to as “Steno”, who was a 17th century renowned physician who made large contributions to the practice of medicine and to our understanding of the human body. He was extremely popular throughout Europe as a physician with royalty and noble families, but had a love for teaching why he returned home and became a lecturer in Copenhagen. Here he is shown dissecting the dead body of a dead woman dressed in his usual very classy attire. The building behind him is the Danish Nature- and medicinal Science Library in Copenhagen which is the perfect location for someone like Steno with both his contributions as a great scientist and a lecturer.
